SpaceX eyes $60b deal for AI coding startup Cursor
SpaceX said it may buy San Francisco-based AI coding startup Cursor for US$60 billion or pay US$10 billion for the companies’ joint work as Elon Musk looks to strengthen his AI coding efforts.
The move follows comments from Elon Musk that xAI lags peers in coding tools.
Cursor was discussing a roughly US$2 billion funding round at a valuation above US$50 billion, with Nvidia and Andreessen Horowitz set to join.
Cursor launched its AI coding assistant in 2023 and competes in a crowded market with major AI players , Anthropic and OpenAI.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Cursor’s valuation rests on fast growth and improving margins
- Cursor’s valuation rests on a projected annualized revenue run rate above US$6 billion by the end of 2026, up from US$2 billion in February 1.
- The company recently reached a slight gross profit, meaning revenue after direct product costs turned positive after earlier product losses 1.
- It got there by releasing its own Composer model and leaning more on cheaper third-party models, which cut reliance on suppliers such as Anthropic, an AI startup that provides large language models 1.
- Profit comes mainly from sales to large companies, while accounts for individual software developers still lose money 1.
A deal would fit Musk’s plan to bring more AI tools in-house
- A purchase would fold a software asset into Musk’s wider AI work, giving him more control over part of the coding tool stack.
- Cursor would add a fast-growing business with solid uptake among large companies and lower reliance on rivals for coding technology 1.
- The move also fits Musk’s habit of keeping close control of operations, so Cursor’s development would support xAI and SpaceX.
