SpaceX completes 11th Starship test ahead of moon missions

SpaceX launched its 11th Starship test flight from its Starbase facility in Texas on October 13, 2025, sending the rocket to space and landing the Super Heavy booster in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company tested new heat shield tiles, conducted a soft water landing, and deployed mock Starlink satellites.

This was the final test before flights of an upgraded Starship prototype designed for future moon and Mars missions.

The next version will include docking adapters and orbital refueling hardware.

NASA has contracted SpaceX for its Artemis program, aiming to land humans on the moon in 2027, though a NASA safety panel warned that slow progress could delay plans.

Starship is also key to launching heavier Starlink satellites and supporting SpaceX’s Mars ambitions.

Orbital refueling is the bottleneck for a 2027 moon landing

  • SpaceX needs to move hundreds of tons of cryogenic (super-cooled) propellant between two Starships in orbit before a crewed lunar landing. In 2024, NASA expected a first refueling mission in 2025, while Elon Musk now targets 2026.
  • An upgraded Starship expected by early 2026 will carry docking adapters (mechanisms that let two spacecraft connect), but a lunar lander will take many tanker flights, a choreography never tried at this scale.
  • NASA safety advisers warned that slow progress on lander work could push the U.S. moon effort back years. The 2027 target looks ambitious given unproven systems.

Cryogenic suppliers can tap NASA demand

  • Builders of cryogenic transfer hardware and guidance can pursue NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) Tipping Point solicitations. These cost-sharing awards gave SpaceX $3 million for refueling couplers and Blue Origin $10 million for hydrogen plus oxygen liquefaction systems 1.
  • Teams in active cooling, pressure management, or closed-loop systems can apply to NASA’s standing Announcement of Collaboration Opportunity (ACO). It offers about ten Unfunded Space Act Agreements per round, which provide non-cash access to NASA facilities and expertise valued at $1 to $2 million each 2.
  • Small satellite propulsion or autonomous navigation firms can use NASA’s Flight Opportunities program for suborbital tests and Tipping Point solicitations. NASA gave Accion Systems, an electric-propulsion startup, $3.9 million to mature a miniaturized propulsion system that enables more science missions 1.
