SpaceX beats revenue estimates, shares fall 5% after hours
SpaceX reported US$7.8 billion in quarterly revenue on August 4, beating analysts’ average estimate of US$6.81 billion in its first financial report since the company’s June initial public offering (IPO).
But the stock fell about 5% in US after-hours trading as capital expenditure rose to about US$18.4 billion from US$10.1 billion in the first quarter.
The company posted a 9-cent loss per share, better than the 24-cent loss analysts had forecast.
It also said Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, had 12 million subscribers in the second quarter, below analysts’ estimate of 12.19 million.
The results followed a July 24 Starship test flight that successfully deployed satellites and returned to Earth largely unscathed after earlier setbacks.
Still, Starship operations require licenses, and a higher launch cadence depends on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) license changes tied to environmental and safety reviews.
