Southeast Asiaโ€™s digital economy may hit $1t by 2030: report

Southeast Asiaโ€™s digital economy could reach US$1 trillion by 2030, with potential to double if regional integration and real-time payments increase, according to a report by HSBC and Google Cloud.

The study, developed with Payments and Commerce Market Intelligence, found that AI, programmable finance, and instant payments are key factors driving this growth.

The report highlights that 75 million digital entrepreneurs account for 58% of ASEANโ€™s digital economy, generating an expected US$175 billion in transaction volume in 2025, with projections rising to US$580 billion by 2030.

It also found that 77% of ASEAN consumers use embedded finance tools, such as wallets and buy now pay later apps.

Speed and security are the main factors influencing payment preferences, with 67% and 57% of consumers citing these as priorities, respectively.

Singapore remains a leader in digital innovation in the region, attracting S$192 billion (US$142 billion) in foreign direct investment in 2024.
