South Korea’s Upstage raises $45m backed by Amazon, AMD

Upstage has raised US$45 million in a series B bridge round backed by Korea Development Bank, Amazon, and AMD.

The South Korea-based company develops enterprise-focused generative AI products and has now secured a total of US$157 million in funding.

Upstage said the new capital will support the development of its Solar language model, enhance its document AI tools, and help expand its presence in the US and Asia-Pacific markets.

The company is also working with Amazon Web Services to build and deploy its language models using AWS’s cloud and machine learning infrastructure.

Upstage’s AI models are used by large companies such as Samsung and several Korean insurers, and the company reports growing adoption in the US insurance sector.

The latest funding follows a US$72 million series B round in 2024 led by Korean investors including SK Networks and Shinhan Venture Investment.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Insurance document chaos creates massive AI automation opportunity

The insurance industry’s reliance on manual document processing represents one of the largest untapped markets for AI automation.

Upstage’s focus on insurance makes strategic sense given that U.S. claims adjudication alone costs $25.7 billion annually, with $18 billion tied to overturned denials and unnecessary review cycles1.

This massive cost burden stems from insurers handling over 100,000 documents annually through predominantly manual processes2.

The industry’s document processing challenges extend beyond just volume, as insurers struggle with unstructured data from policies, loss runs, financial statements, and emails that require human interpretation3.

Traditional optical character recognition tools fall short because they extract static fields without understanding context, while modern intelligent document processing can achieve over 95% accuracy by interpreting documents holistically1.

Multiple industry sources confirm that manual data entry leads to high error rates, costly mistakes, and significant delays in claims processing324.

This creates a compelling business case for AI companies like Upstage, as successful automation in insurance document processing can deliver substantial time savings, cost reduction, and improved customer satisfaction. This explains why Fortune 500 companies, including Samsung, have already adopted their solutions1.
