South Korea’s president pushes for semiconductor growth

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has pledged government support to strengthen the country’s semiconductor industry amid growing global demand for AI technologies.

At a meeting in Seoul on December 10 with business leaders and industry officials, Lee called for advancing the entire semiconductor ecosystem, not just memory chip production.

He noted that South Korea leads in global memory chip market share but relies heavily on US equipment and Japanese materials.

Lee urged companies to invest beyond the Seoul region, citing government plans for tax, regulatory, and infrastructure support to promote balanced regional growth.

He also highlighted opportunities in southern regions with renewable energy resources for new industrial clusters.

Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan said the government will invest 215.9 billion won (US$146.8 million) by 2032 to develop next-generation memory technologies and AI-optimized chips.
