South Korea’s largest bank files stablecoin trademarks
KB Kookmin Bank, South Korea’s largest bank, has submitted trademark applications related to stablecoins.
This move aligns with the country’s efforts to support local currency-pegged digital assets.
According to filings with the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service, KB submitted 17 trademark applications this week.
The trademarks include symbols such as KBKRW, KRWKB, KBST, and KRWST.
These cover software for cryptocurrency management and blockchain transactions.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ South Korea’s stablecoin push reflects broader economic sovereignty concerns
South Korea’s coordinated effort to develop won-based stablecoins represents more than just technological innovation. It is a direct response to economic sovereignty concerns.
A bank official explicitly highlighted the need to “secure both the independence and competitiveness of the domestic financial system” against foreign dollar-based stablecoins that could dominate the market 1.
President Lee Jae-myung’s administration has positioned won-backed stablecoins as a strategy to retain national wealth within South Korea’s economy rather than flowing to foreign currency issuers 2.
This aligns with trends in other Asian economies where digital currency initiatives are increasingly tied to national economic strategy rather than purely financial innovation.
The minimum capital requirement of 500 million won ($368,000) for stablecoin issuers established in the Digital Asset Basic Act suggests a deliberate balancing act. It is set high enough to ensure stability but accessible enough to foster innovation 2.
2️⃣ Central bank caution creates tension with private sector enthusiasm
The Bank of Korea’s measured approach contrasts sharply with the private sector’s eagerness to enter the stablecoin market, creating a dynamic regulatory environment.
BOK Deputy Governor Ryoo Sang-dai has advocated for stablecoins to be issued initially only through regulated banks, emphasizing consumer protection and financial stability concerns 3.
