South Korea’s Hana Financial sets up $340m AI, renewables fund
Hana Financial Group will set up a 500 billion won (US$340 million) infrastructure fund to invest in renewable energy and AI.
Planned investments include an offshore wind farm in Wando and AI hub centers near Seoul.
Electricity from the Wando wind farm is expected to supply power to AI data centers.
Hana said the fund will invest at early development stages to secure assets and obtain financing arrangement rights as projects seek larger funding.
Hana Bank will provide 400 billion won (US$267.55 million) of the fund while other units will supply the remaining 100 billion won (US$66.88 million).

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Wando hosts several offshore wind proposals, but names and progress differ across sources
- One report mentions an offshore wind farm in Wando, South Jeolla Province, yet multiple databases and announcements tie Wando to several separate projects 1.
- GlobalData, via Power Technology, lists a 600MW Wando Offshore Wind Farm owned and developed by Korea South-East Power (KOSEP), a South Korean power generation company, with a 2026 commercial operation target 1. DNV (a Norway-based engineering and assurance firm) describes a different 400MW Wando Jangbogo Offshore Wind Power Project led by Korea Western Power (KOWEPO), another South Korean power generation company, and Jeonnam Development Corporation, a regional development entity, working with Kolon Global, which DNV calls a private EPC firm playing a leading role; EPC stands for engineering, procurement, and construction 2.
- GlobalData also profiles a 148.5MW project named Wando Offshore Wind Power_KWP in South Jeolla planned in the Yellow Sea, with ownership and schedule details that vary across GlobalData pages. Global Energy Monitor, a nonprofit energy-project tracker, lists a “Wando Offshore wind farm” as shelved, which suggests overlapping names or shifting timelines in the area 34.
Hana links renewables to rising AI power needs, though the build plan stays unclear
- Electricity from the Wando wind farm is expected to feed AI data centers and industrial sites in North and South Jeolla provinces, tying new generation to AI-driven demand growth.
- Wando includes large proposals, including a 600MW entry in GlobalData’s database, yet the report does not name the capacity of the specific wind farm it references 1.
- Hana Financial Group says it plans early-stage investments to secure assets and win financing arrangement rights as projects move toward larger funding rounds. The report does not say Hana is investing alongside KOSEP on the 600MW project listed by GlobalData 1.
