South Korea’s Bithumb to reimburse users after transfer error

South Korean crypto exchange Bithumb announced it will reimburse users affected by an internal transfer error last week, which resulted in the accidental transfer of 620,000 bitcoins to 249 customers.

The transfer, made around 7 p.m. on February 6, involved an average of 2,490 bitcoins per user, worth about 244 billion won (US$166 million).

Some recipients sold part of the transferred bitcoins, leading to a brief drop in prices.

Bithumb said it will fully compensate affected users for their losses and provide an additional 10 percent.

The exchange also said it will waive trading fees on all assets for one week starting at February 9.

The company activated a crisis management team led by senior executives and reported recovering most of the transferred bitcoins, including 618,212 bitcoins and 93 percent of the 1,788 bitcoins sold by users.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The scale of the error signals big gaps in day to day controls

  • This was no small slip. Bithumb sent an average of 2,490 bitcoins worth about US$166 million to each of 249 users, which reveals weak internal controls over money movement.
  • Transfers went to many separate accounts, which makes a one off manual mistake unlikely. A system wide coding issue or a broken process in Bithumb’s transfer flow fits the pattern.
  • Bithumb said it recovered most of the bitcoins. Recipients still sold 1,788 bitcoins, which suggests a delay between the mistaken payout and the recovery push.

Bithumb’s repayment plan lays out the real price of an operations slip

  • The error hit the market fast. Some recipients sold the bitcoin they received, which triggered a short lived price dip.
  • Bithumb said it will repay users for losses, add another 10 percent, and waive trading fees on all assets for one week starting at midnight Monday.
  • The package could run expensive and damage trust. A mistake on this scale can turn into a financial bill plus a reputational hit.
