South Korean researchers develop AI model for cancer vaccine
A team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Neogenlogic, a South Korean biotechnology firm, has developed an AI model to aid in producing personalized cancer vaccines.
The AI platform is designed to identify unique neoantigens in cancer patients, which may help train the immune system and reduce the risk of recurrence.
The research, led by KAIST professor Choi Jung-kyoon, was published in the December 3 edition of Science Advances.
The team said the model predicts which neoantigens will likely trigger a B cell immune response by analyzing the interaction between mutant peptides and B cell receptors.
Choi said the study offers evidence on the potential role of B cells in cancer vaccine development, an area previously lacking effective tools for verification.
The team plans to file an investigational new drug application with the US Food and Drug Administration and aims to start clinical trials in 2027.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
B cell neoantigen prediction uses massive datasets with multi-cohort validation
- Researchers trained the AI model on more than 437,000 peptides tested for immunoglobulin G (IgG) binding and over 370 million B cell receptor (BCR) clones 1. That scope supports B cell epitope (the specific part of an antigen antibodies recognize) prediction.
- Validation used single-cell BCR sequencing (measuring receptors on individual B cells) from SARS-CoV-2–vaccinated individuals 1. Mouse vaccination studies tracked BCR expansion with tumor regression 1. Analyses covered 8,000+ The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) pan-cancer samples and immune checkpoint blockade (drugs that release inhibitory “brakes” on immune cells) responses in 2,074 patients 1. A meta-analysis pooled 11 personalized vaccine trials covering 1,739 neoantigens (tumor-specific mutated protein fragments) 1.
- Press plus company materials call the platform validated with large genomic datasets as well as clinical trial data from global vaccine leaders 2. Coverage does not detail dataset diversity or outside benchmark checks, while the peer-reviewed study lists the cohorts above 21.
Sequencing and cloud analytics firms target rising BCR repertoire demand
- Demand for high-throughput BCR repertoire analysis (profiling the diversity of B cell receptors in an individual) and sequencing rises with B cell–targeted cancer vaccines 3. Adaptive Biotechnologies, a sequencing-driven diagnostics company, runs T cell receptor (TCR) and BCR sequencing with multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays that read from genomic DNA 3. CROs (service companies that run experiments and studies for pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients) offer single-cell BCR profiling that pairs heavy and light chains 4. Long-read platforms enable full-length repertoire analysis (methods that read much longer stretches of DNA/RNA) 5.
- Cloud-based bioinformatics providers (hosted software and compute for the computational analysis of biological data) support immune repertoire analysis with clonal diversity metrics, somatic hypermutation (mutation processes that diversify and can improve antibody binding) patterns, and complementarity-determining region 3 (CDR3) characterization 4. These services give developers a path from research to clinical trials.
