South Korea’s LX Semicon, best known for display driver chips, said on Aug. 10 it had started mass production of its LX61101 automotive microcontroller unit (MCU) and begun supplying it to Hyundai Motor and Kia for motor functions in vehicle body electronic control systems.

The chip monitors motor speed, position, rotation direction, and torque in real time.

It is used in window safety systems and systems that control vehicle aerodynamics in models to be produced in the second half of 2026.

LX Semicon said the LX61101 is the first domestically produced MCU to be supplied to Hyundai Motor and Kia.

The company joined the automakers’ supplier selection process for motor-function MCUs in March 2023 and reached mass production after about three years of development and quality testing.

The move broadens a business long associated with display driver chips, though the company’s portfolio already includes microcontrollers, motor-driver integrated circuits, and other components used in automotive and appliance applications.
