South Korea to invest $22.7m in smart port tech by 2028

The South Korean government plans to invest 31 billion won (US$22.7 million) by 2028 in the development of smart port technologies, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced July 7.

The funding will support the development of automated cargo handling equipment and unmanned vehicles for cargo transport.

The goal is to modernize port facilities and improve efficiency in the shipping industry.

A fully automated terminal was launched in Busan last year as part of this initiative.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ South Korea joins global race for port automation amid explosive market growth

South Korea’s $22.7 million investment in smart port technologies follows a global trend where the smart port market is projected to grow from $4.19 billion in 2024 to over $39.34 billion by 2034, reflecting a 25.1% compound annual growth rate 1.

This investment is particularly strategic given that currently only about 30 out of 2,000 container terminals worldwide are fully automated, indicating significant growth potential in this sector 2.

South Korea’s decision to open a fully automated terminal in Busan last year positions the country alongside other global leaders like Rotterdam and Hamburg that are investing heavily in port digitalization and automation technologies.

The investment aligns with the country’s broader smart city initiatives, including the Busan Eco Delta City project, creating synergies between urban and port development 3.

With maritime nations competing for shipping efficiency and technological leadership, South Korea’s targeted funding aims to ensure its ports remain competitive in an increasingly automated global shipping environment.

2️⃣ Smart ports deliver triple benefits: operational efficiency, cost reduction, and environmental sustainability

The transition to smart ports offers multiple advantages beyond the obvious efficiency gains, including significant environmental benefits as ports move away from fossil fuel dependence 2.

Automated ports demonstrate measurable improvements in operational metrics—automated terminals consistently show higher productivity and accuracy while reducing labor costs and human error in cargo handling 4.

Ports implementing smart technologies report enhanced security capabilities through AI-powered surveillance and predictive analytics, addressing both physical and cyber threats that have become increasingly common in maritime operations 1.
