South Korea to invest $2.2b to push robots beyond factories

South Korea is shifting focus beyond humanoid robots to deploy automation across services and sectors such as agriculture, logistics, healthcare, national defense, and social safety.

Data from the International Federation of Robotics shows South Korea had 1,012 industrial robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers in 2023, among the world’s highest robot densities.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy plans to invest more than US$2.2 billion by 2030 under a national robot strategy to expand robot deployment beyond manufacturing.

Consultancy Spherical Insight & Consulting projects South Korea’s humanoid robot market will reach about US$196 million by 2035, as growing corporate investments, including from Hyundai Motor Group, continue to draw market attention.

Experts warn that high costs and gaps in infrastructure and regulation could slow large-scale robot adoption.

  • South Korea plans to invest more than US$2.2 billion by 2030 through the fourth Basic Plan for Intelligent Robots (2024–2028). The goal is to move robots beyond manufacturing into services such as agriculture, logistics, healthcare, national defense, and social safety 1.
  • Competition is rising. The Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET), South Korea’s national policy think tank, said China holds an “obvious advantage” in areas including robotics and that South Korea now needs to “catch up” 2.

  • A KAIST/Clarivate analysis flagged a gap. It described China and Korea as having government-driven AI technology development ecosystems with “relatively low qualitative outputs” compared with more industry-oriented ecosystems in the U.S. and Canada 1.
  • Service robotics could open new lines of business that build on Korea’s strength in information and communication technology (ICT). This comes as China’s industrial robot supply chain grows more complete 2.
  • The shift suggests another robotics supplier may emerge. It also adds momentum to self-reliant technology stacks that could split supply chains and raise costs.
