South Korea to impose duties on Japan, China robots
South Korea’s Korea Trade Commission has decided to impose antidumping duties of up to 19.9% on vertically articulated industrial robots imported from Japan and China, citing damage to the domestic industry.
The proposed rates are 17.5% to 18.6% for Japanese products and 16.0% to 19.9% for Chinese products, and would be sent to the finance minister.
The case followed a petition by HD Hyundai Robotics accusing foreign firms including Fanuc, Yaskawa, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries of selling vertically articulated industrial robots at unfairly low prices.
The commission has applied provisional duties of 21.2% to 43.6% since November and also opened new probes, including reviews of Chinese PET inputs and alleged unfair trade practices related to patent infringement in EV lithium-ion batteries.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
A trade fight that doubles as industrial protection
- HD Hyundai Robotics filed the petition against several foreign robotics makers, including Japan’s Fanuc and China’s KUKA Robotics Guangdong 1.
- The case focuses on vertically articulated industrial robots with four or more axes, widely used in advanced manufacturing such as automotive and electronics production 1.
- Parallel probes into EV lithium-ion battery-related patent infringement claims and other Chinese imports place this move within a wider push on trade enforcement, not a one-off action 1.
Higher robot prices could squeeze South Korean manufacturers
- The duties aim to support local suppliers like HD Hyundai Robotics by raising the cost of competing imported robots, which can clash with factory operators that depend on foreign models for automation 1.
- South Korea’s export-led economy relies on advanced manufacturing in automotive and electronics, both heavy users of industrial robots and related equipment 2.
- If importers pass the duties along, some automation gear covered by the antidumping ruling may cost more, which could shift investment schedules or reshape operating budgets 1.
