South Korea plans to open a national AI computing center by 2027, with an investment of 2.5 trillion won (US$1.7 billion) from both public and private sector.

The center aims for a computing capacity of 1 exaflop, a significant milestone.

Before its completion, the government plans to acquire advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) by the end of this year to support local AI research and development.

This initiative is part of South Korea’s strategy to strengthen its AI infrastructure and rank among the top three global AI leaders.

As of late 2023, the country had about 2,000 H100 GPUs, while tech giants like Meta and Microsoft owned around 150,000 units.
