South Korea to test real-time GPS service without internet
South Korea will start testing a new GPS-based positioning service, called the Gridded Virtual Reference Station (G-VRS), in October 2025.
The system provides centimeter-level location accuracy without internet access, making it useful in remote areas such as islands and mountains.
G-VRS is designed to complement the existing internet-dependent Virtual Reference Station system and has shown similar accuracy in tests.
The government has already installed GNSS control points nationwide, including Jeju Island and Gageodo, and plans to expand to 103 points by the end of 2025.
Up to 300 users can join the trial, with registration details available on the National Geographic Information Institute website starting October 1, 2025.
