South Korea taps SK Telecom, Kakao, KT for free AI plan
South Korea’s Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology selected consortia led by SK Telecom, Kakao, and KT on August 28 to run AI for All, a government project to offer free domestic AI services and reduce reliance on foreign platforms.
The ministry said it chose the groups after written and presentation reviews that covered technical fit, ease of use, user acquisition plans, and ecosystem contributions.
The consortia are expected to build a general-purpose AI chatbot, a public AI agent, and specialised services with startups.
The three operators will receive 512 Nvidia B200 graphics processing units this year, while the government plans to cover nationwide service costs through its budget from next year.
SK Telecom, a South Korean telecom operator, said its service will support tasks including restaurant bookings and the issuance of 83 certificate types through calls or text messages.
The policy push comes as ChatGPT leads growth among generative AI apps in South Korea.
The GPU allocation also follows a broader government-backed effort to build AI infrastructure with Nvidia and local industry.
