South Korea seeks China, Interpol help to arrest ex-Coupang staff
South Korean prosecutors have asked Chinese authorities for help in arresting a former Coupang employee suspected of leaking personal data from the ecommerce company.
Coupang is a major online retailer based in South Korea.
Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho said prosecutors are also seeking support from Interpol after a court approved an arrest warrant for the Chinese national on December 8.
The data breach reportedly affected millions of users, with lawmakers estimating up to two-thirds of South Korea’s population could be impacted.
Jung told parliament that the government is following the required legal procedures but has not yet received a response from Beijing regarding Seoul’s extradition request.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Lawmakers say the breach may have impacted more users than Coupang disclosed
- Lawmakers estimate the breach may have impacted around two-thirds of the country, roughly 35 million people, raising questions about whether any official count captures the full scope 1.
- If the incident went undetected for an extended period, attackers would have had time to exfiltrate (steal and transfer) data beyond what has been confirmed 1.
- Authorities have identified a suspect who is a former Coupang employee 1, which raises concerns that sensitive authentication data or backend credentials (internal passwords and access keys) could have been targeted.
Identity protection providers can pitch bundles to banks and telcos serving affected Koreans
- Given the scale of exposure, banks plus telecom operators (telcos) will see fast demand for identity monitoring services, creating distribution openings for credit monitoring or fraud detection vendors who can white-label (resell under the bank or carrier’s brand) solutions.
