South Korea pushes faster rollout of chip, AI projects
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on July 6 called for faster rollout of the government’s chip cluster and AI projects.
This is including quicker environmental reviews, as Seoul pushes ahead with three investments in semiconductors, physical AI, and AI data centers.
At a meeting with senior officials and executives from Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, Lee said administrative procedures should run in parallel, work on power and water supplies should start earlier.
Site selection should move faster, and a dedicated team in Cheong Wa Dae should support the planned semiconductor cluster in Honam.
Samsung and SK hynix have pledged a combined 800 trillion won (US$520 billion) for the Honam cluster. The plan is expected to include four fabs.
Lee also said efforts to secure electricity and water should begin immediately. His emphasis on utilities follows delays at Yongin, where site preparation slipped about and power and water infrastructure remained constraints.
