South Korea launches $917m AI program

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency will hold a public competition for the 2026 AI Transformation (AX) research and development projects in Gyeongnam and Jeonbuk.

The ministry plans to invest a combined 1.4 trillion won (US$917 million) over five years in the two projects.

Gyeongnam’s project focuses on a human-AI collaborative physical intelligence action model for ultra-precision manufacturing control. Meanwhile, Jeonbuk’s project focuses on a physical AI-based software platform for a self-operating intelligent factory that connects factory and logistics systems.

The projects are part of a national strategy that designated four regions as AI innovation hubs.

In Gyeongnam, the project supports one of South Korea’s major manufacturing hubs.
