South Korea launches $186m AI manufacturing fund
South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Resources announced a budget of 268.5 billion won (US$186.2 million) for its industrial infrastructure innovation program in 2026, marking the largest allocation to date and an 11.5% increase from last year.
The funding aims to support AI-powered manufacturing.
The program will fund shared equipment and facilities for testing, evaluation, and pilot projects.
This year, 28 new projects will be selected, with about 40% of the funds directed toward building AI-based manufacturing infrastructure, including autonomous AI labs and transformation facilities.
The ministry will also require new projects to establish shared research spaces at regional centers, fostering collaboration among companies, universities, and labs.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Key metrics are needed to gauge the impact of increased funding
- The real-world impact of the 268.5 billion won budget should be judged against the past results of 286 infrastructure centers nationwide across 141 institutions.
- Measures such as shared-equipment utilization rates, the number of small and mid-sized firms served, and commercialization outcomes should be tracked to check whether the expanded investment works.
- Without these measures, it cannot be judged whether a larger budget will speed Korea’s goal of becoming a global leader in manufacturing AI.
AI vendors can capitalize on the new infrastructure push
- Technology operators that sell AI for manufacturing can treat the program as a near-term sales opening.
- About 40% of new funding for the ministry’s newly selected projects goes to AI-based manufacturing infrastructure, so suppliers of autonomous AI labs, machine learning operations (MLOps) platforms (tools for deploying, monitoring, and managing machine-learning models in production), and AI-powered quality assurance systems can watch for procurement notices.
- The first call for proposals to pick nine projects gives these firms a chance to provide equipment and software to regional centers, including new sites in AI, semiconductors, and secondary batteries.
