South Korea forms agentic AI alliance to shape ecosystem

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT launched the Agentic AI Alliance in Seoul with NC AI, LG AI Research, Kakao, and Soongsil University’s AI Safety Center to coordinate strategy for the emerging “agentic AI” sector.

Agentic AI refers to systems that can set plans and act to reach specific goals.

Members will split responsibilities across use cases, policy proposal, tool optimization, and AI safety standards.

Second Vice Science Minister Ryu Je-myung said competition in AI is shifting from technology to ecosystem leadership.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This alliance sits inside a national plan with billions in funding

  • Several members already have a role in South Korea’s Sovereign AI Foundation Models project. LG AI Research and Kakao are among the companies named for the government-backed push to build domestic large AI models 1.
  • The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) plans to deploy up to 50,000 of the latest NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs) for sovereign AI work. The same plan includes sovereign clouds (nationally controlled cloud infrastructure) plus AI factories (large-scale AI computing and deployment centers) 1.
  • Industry partners are also building systems for “physical AI” (AI systems that interact with and control machines in the real world). LG set up a dedicated unit to speed humanoid robot commercialization and it is working with Rainbow Robotics (a South Korean robotics company), while Hyundai Motor Group is tying an approximately $3 billion investment to a national physical AI cluster initiative 2.

Focus on physical and industrial AI plus sovereign models

  • South Korea is pushing industrial and “physical AI” work in areas such as manufacturing and telecommunications. Expanded AI infrastructure plans support that push alongside sovereign foundation-model efforts 1.
  • The approach aims to support real use cases, including agentic systems for complex engineering design 3 and proposed agentic workflows that automate parts of scientific research in oncology (cancer research and treatment) 4.
  • NVIDIA and Korean officials describe the effort as a move to make “intelligence” a new export. They link it to Korea’s long-running strengths in manufacturing 1.
