South Korea fines Agoda over booking disclosures

South Korea’s Korea Media and Communications Commission said on July 6 it fined Agoda 2.4 billion won (US$1.58 million) and ordered corrective measures over disclosures it said could harm consumers.

The regulator said Agoda did not clearly show on the reservation screen whether airline tickets were refundable or what cancellation and change fees would apply.

It also said some accommodation bookings under Agoda’s pay-later option did not include a possible fee of up to 5% in the displayed rate. In some cases, Agoda showed the final charge in a foreign currency or used vague terms.

The investigation began in September 2024, and Agoda corrected some issues after the probe started.

The case follows earlier enforcement in South Korea. Authorities sanctioned Booking.com and Agoda in 2022 for deceptive advertising practices.
