South Korea’s government said developing a domestic frontier AI model comparable to the US “Mythos-class” would require about 10,000 Nvidia Vera Rubin-class graphics processing units (GPUs), costing roughly 3.5 trillion won (US$2.35 billion) for the chips alone.

Nvidia said Rubin CPX systems are expected at end-2026, suggesting any such effort would rely on hardware that is not yet widely available.

Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said the current sovereign AI foundation model project is too limited for that goal.

In May, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) set aside 1.5 trillion won (US$978 million) for a procurement program to secure 13,000 GPUs.

Bae said funding for a separate frontier AI program has not been decided.

The ministry plans to deploy security-specialised AI in the public sector this year, with private-sector adoption planned for late this year or early next year.
