🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The AI rally runs on rare profit margins and years-long chip shortages
- Stock gains for SK hynix and Samsung come from a historic supply crunch in High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), an advanced memory chip used in AI servers. The shortage is lifting profits 1.
- SK hynix posted an operating margin of about 72% 2.
- Demand has grown so strong that customers are reserving memory supply years ahead, with some locking in allocations through 2027 3.
- Production-ready capacity for next-generation HBM4, the next version of High Bandwidth Memory, is already sold out. The shortage may last for years 1.
South Korea’s chip lead brings harder choices between rivals
- The rally strengthens South Korea’s place in the global AI supply chain. It also raises tougher geopolitical questions.
- South Korea’s lead in HBM memory has become a bottleneck for China’s AI plans. China’s local memory industry still trails, and analysts link AI self-sufficiency to non-Chinese memory suppliers 4.
- South Korea also faces strain with the United States, its main ally, over technology rules. U.S. export controls have hindered broader defense industrial cooperation 5.
- That leaves South Korean conglomerates managing pressure from both powers, with commercial wins carrying diplomatic risk 6.
