South Korea boosts AI development with $4.18b investment

South Korean Acting President Choi Sang-mok has announced plans to accelerate AI development in South Korea, aiming to position the country among the top three global leaders.

During the third National Artificial Intelligence Committee meeting, he outlined the establishment of a national AI team and significant funding for a competitive large-scale language model (LLM).

A preliminary feasibility study will assess a 1 trillion won (US$695 million) AI research initiative to secure proprietary general-purpose AI technologies and cultivate talent.

The government will also fast-track the 2 trillion won (US$1.39 billion) National AI Computing Center, set to acquire 10,000 GPUs in 2025.

Tax incentives will support AI and cloud businesses, while access to public and industrial data will be expanded.

Additionally, a 3 trillion won (US$2.09 billion) AI startup fund by 2027 will assist 100 specialized AI firms, focusing on high-impact projects in health care and legal services.
