Sony Interactive Entertainment said it would stop producing physical game discs for all new PlayStation console games from January 2028. After that, new titles will be sold only in digital formats.

The change will not affect games already released or scheduled to launch in disc format before January 2028. Sony said the move reflects broader demand for digital media in gaming and entertainment.

The shift could add pressure on game retailers, as shrinking physical game sales have already been linked to store closures.

Sony’s aggressive shift toward digital distribution coincides with an ongoing legal battle.

The tech giant has proposed a US$7.85 million settlement to resolve a US class-action lawsuit over alleged anticompetitive practices in its PlayStation Store.

While Sony denies any wrongdoing, a court fairness hearing on the matter is scheduled for October 2026.
