Sony raises PS5 prices in China as console costs climb

Sony will raise PlayStation 5 Slim and PS5 Pro consoles prices in China from April 2, citing ongoing global economic pressures.

The PS5 Slim Digital Edition will rise 500 yuan (US$72.39) to 3,999 yuan (US$578.95), while the standard PS5 Slim will go up 100 yuan (US$14.48) to 4,399 yuan (US$636.86).

The PS5 Pro will increase 700 yuan (US$101.34) to 6,299 yuan (US$880), the biggest increase in the lineup.

This is Sony’s second price adjustment for China’s PS5 range since 2022 and the first price change for the PS5 Pro since it launched.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Rising component costs are pushing the PS5 price up

  • Sony’s “economic pressures” can include supply-chain strain plus higher component costs. Memory makers are steering output to higher-margin data-center chips for AI infrastructure, which tightens supply for consumer electronics such as game consoles 1.
  • Sony chief financial officer Lin Tao said Sony has locked in enough parts for the current fiscal year. Even so, rising memory prices could affect PS5 hardware profitability “for next fiscal year and onward” 2.
  • The increase arrives as demand cools. PS5 unit sales fell year on year in the April to June 2024 quarter, to 2.4 million from 3.3 million 3.

Console competition is moving toward earning more per player

  • Sony is putting more weight on earning from the existing PlayStation installed base as it grows. Lin Tao said this focus is a priority as the installed base expands 2.
  • Games & Network Services operating income rose 32% year on year even as PS5 unit sales fell 3. Sony said foreign exchange rates helped, along with higher revenue from network services, mainly PlayStation Plus, Sony’s gaming subscription service, plus first-party game software titles 3.
  • The increase offers an early sign for the wider market. Future growth may lean more on software sales, subscriptions, and tighter costs than on console shipments 1.
