Sony lifts profit forecast on strong anime, lower tariffs

Sony raised its operating profit forecast for the year ending March 2026 by 8% to 1.4 trillion yen (US$9.5 billion), citing a smaller-than-expected impact from US tariffs and strong performance in its entertainment and chips divisions.

Operating profit for July-September rose 10% to 429 billion yen (US$2.86 billion), with higher sales in its music and chips businesses.

Sony said the success of the animated film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle contributed to its results.

The company sold 3.9 million PlayStation 5 consoles in Q2, slightly up year-on-year, but its games division saw lower profit due to impairment losses related to Destiny 2.

Sony reported selling 3.3 million units of Ghost of Yotei, which launched last month.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Sony expands automotive image sensor push with IMX828 beyond consumer electronics

  • Sony’s semiconductor unit launched the IMX828 complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensor for automotive cameras, the first to integrate the MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface) A-PHY in-vehicle connectivity standard, with 8-effective-megapixel resolution and up to 150 dB dynamic range 1.
  • Automotive programs bring higher margins and longer design-in cycles (from winning a slot in a vehicle platform to mass production) than smartphone cameras, which can steady results when consumer demand swings.
  • By integrating the high-speed interface, the IMX828 removes the need for external serializer chips (components that convert image sensor data for transmission over long automotive cables). That enables lower power, compact, thermally efficient cameras that could help Sony win next-generation deals with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers (major system integrators that sell directly to automakers) 1.

Trade compliance software can win business from Japanese electronics exporters amid tariff uncertainty

  • Sony cut its expected US tariff hit by 29% to 50 billion yen from 70 billion yen. Exporters such as Nintendo, Canon, and Panasonic will also need mitigation.
  • Section 301 tariffs on covered imports from China range from 7.5% to 100% on certain categories (e.g., EVs), with increases planned in 2025–2026 for semiconductors and batteries 23.
  • Vendors offering tariff engineering (designing products or supply chains to qualify for lower duties), Harmonized System (HS) code classification optimization (ensuring the most accurate customs codes to avoid overpayment), and duty drawback services (refunds of certain duties previously paid) can target Japanese manufacturers. The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) opened a Section 301 probe on Oct. 28, 2025 into China’s implementation of the Phase I agreement, with a hearing set for Dec. 16 2.
