Software testing platform BrowserStack acquires Requestly

BrowserStack has acquired Requestly, an open-source HTTP interception and API mocking tool, according to a statement released May 6, 2025.

This acquisition is intended to enhance the development of Requestly and expand its roadmap.

Requestly, launched in 2018, provides tools for HTTP interception, debugging, and mocking.

It is widely used in web development, with over 200,000 developers from more than 10,000 companies using its features.

BrowserStack confirmed that Requestly will continue to operate as an independent, open-source tool. Future plans include support for Android emulators and iOS simulators.

The specific financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Browser-based approach represents a shift in developer tooling paradigms

Requestly’s success signals a broader movement away from traditional desktop-based proxy solutions that dominated HTTP interception for years.

The tool’s Chrome Extension-based approach eliminates the need for complex configurations like system-level proxy settings and SSL certificates, addressing a key pain point for developers working in corporate environments with VPNs 1.

This browser-native design has resonated strongly with developers, as evidenced by Requestly’s 4.3-star Chrome Store rating from over 1,200 reviews and adoption by 200,000+ developers across 10,000+ companies 1.

The shift toward browser-based tooling represents a simplification trend in developer workflows, moving away from traditional heavy-weight desktop tools toward lightweight, easily accessible solutions that integrate directly into existing development environments.

Traditional HTTP debugging tools often required significant setup and maintenance, creating friction that Requestly’s approach eliminates through direct browser integration. This demonstrates how removing technical barriers can drive widespread tool adoption.

2️⃣ API mocking addresses a critical bottleneck in modern development workflows

The acquisition highlights how API dependencies between frontend and backend teams have become a significant productivity constraint in modern development.
