SoftBank tumbles in Asian AI stock selloff
Asian AI-related stocks fell on July 17 as a selloff in US chip stocks spread to the region. Investors worried that hyperscalers could slow AI infrastructure spending.
In Japan, SoftBank Group dropped more than 9%, while chip-equipment makers Tokyo Electron and Advantest fell more than 8% and 10%, respectively, in a broader retreat from AI-linked shares.
The decline came even after TSMC said AI demand remained robust.
The Taiwanese chipmaker set its 2026 capital spending at the high end of its earlier US$52 billion to US$56 billion guidance. It also raised its full-year US-dollar revenue growth outlook to more than 30%.
