SoftBank shares plunge 10% after Nvidia stake sale
SoftBank’s shares dropped as much as 10% in Tokyo on November 11, after the company disclosed it had sold its entire stake in Nvidia for US$5.8 billion.
The Japanese tech investor made the sale to raise funds for further AI-related investments, amid growing market concerns about high valuations in the sector.
SoftBank reported stronger-than-expected net income of ¥2.5 trillion (US$16.2 billion) for its fiscal Q2 and announced a 4-for-1 stock split.
The Nvidia sale comes as investors debate whether large-scale spending on AI by major tech firms will generate the expected returns.
Nvidia shares also fell as much as 3.9% in US trading following the news.
SoftBank executives said the Nvidia sale was a financing decision and declined to comment on whether the AI sector is facing a bubble.
The company has previously sold and repurchased stakes in Nvidia, with its latest holding disclosed earlier in 2025.
