SoftBank secures $1.75b loan for ABB deal, source says

A group of banks has wrapped up a US$1.75 billion-equivalent term loan in the US and Europe to help fund SoftBank Group Corp.’s US$5.375 billion acquisition of ABB Ltd.’s robotics unit, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The debt package includes a US$800 million tranche and a 825 million euros (US$944 million) tranche.

It priced at a margin of 4.25 percentage points over benchmark rates and at 98.5 cents on the dollar, the person said, after lenders increased the dollar portion by US$200 million and reduced the euro loan.

The loan sale was arranged by banks including BNP Paribas, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, and Mizuho Financial Group.

SoftBank Group and ABB, a Swiss engineering and electrification company, signed the deal in October 2025.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, with closing expected in mid-to-late 2026.

ABB has said the business generated US$2.3 billion in 2024 revenue and held the global No. 2 position in robotics.

SoftBank has said the purchase will strengthen its AI robotics business, while ABB said the robotics unit posted an operational EBITA margin of 12.1 percent in 2024.
