SoftBank said to complete $22.5b OpenAI funding by year-end

SoftBank is working to fulfill a US$22.5 billion funding commitment to OpenAI by the end of 2025, according to sources cited.

The Japanese conglomerate has raised cash by selling stakes in Nvidia and T-Mobile US, and may use undrawn margin loans backed by its shares in Arm Holdings.

SoftBank, led by CEO Masayoshi Son, agreed to invest in OpenAI at a US$300 billion valuation in April, with the remaining payment due by year-end.

SoftBank has slowed most new Vision Fund investments and postponed the IPO of its payments app, PayPay, to Q1 2026 due to the recent US government shutdown.

The company still owns about 4% of T-Mobile US and reported US$27.2 billion in cash as of September 30.
