SoftBank reportedly pauses talks on $50b US data center deal

SoftBank Group Corp. has paused talks to acquire US data center operator Switch Inc., affecting its Stargate AI infrastructure project, according to sources.

The company pursued a roughly US$50 billion deal to control Switch’s data centers, supporting its AI ambitions with OpenAI.

SoftBank Group canceled a planned January announcement but remains in talks about a partial investment or partnership.

The deal was expected to be among SoftBank’s largest and could have boosted its US data center expansion.

Some within SoftBank were concerned about the deal size and operational logistics.

SoftBank, Switch, and DigitalBridge declined to comment.
