SoftBank nears $6.5b deal to acquire chipmaker Ampere
SoftBank Group Corp. is reportedly engaged in advanced discussions to acquire Ampere Computing LLC.
This deal could value the chip designer at around US$6.5 billion, taking debt into account, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
An announcement about the transaction may occur within the next few weeks, though sources warn that talks could be delayed or fall through.
Representatives from SoftBank, Ampere, and Arm Holdings Plc, a chip designer owned by SoftBank, declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations.
Ampere, which receives backing from Oracle Corp. and Carlyle Group Inc., specializes in creating processors for data centers that use Arm’s technology.
