SoftBank, HorizonX join QAI Ventures to build SG quantum hub

Singapore-based QAI Ventures has launched an industry cluster program to promote the development of quantum computing, with partnerships involving SoftBank Corp. and HorizonX.

The initiative aims to support the transition of quantum technology from research to commercial use across sectors such as communications, finance, industrials, and life sciences.

SoftBank joins as a strategic partner in the Networks & Communication cluster, while HorizonX, collaborating with MIT, will provide educational support to industry leaders.

The program targets four verticals: digital infrastructure, financial services, industrials, and healthcare, aligning with Singapore’s RIE 2030 plan.

QAI Ventures also plans to implement a venture-building program in Singapore to help quantum startups develop customer-ready products over three phases.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

QAI’s program is a venture pipeline, not just a think tank

  • QAI Ventures operates as a multi-stage venture capital firm, with its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore 1.
  • QAI backs the effort with its own money, offering an early-stage accelerator ticket of US$200,000 with follow-on up to US$2 million, plus a new US$150 million growth fund 2, 1.
  • Industry clusters link corporate end-users in communications, finance, industrials, and life sciences with startups that QAI funds and helps build, moving research toward commercial products 3.
  • QAI also plans to launch seven new quantum ventures in Singapore by 2027, using a proprietary database of over 2,000 patents 4.

Singapore’s strategy is about commercializing research, not just funding it

  • Singapore has put around S$700 million into quantum research and development over two decades 5.
  • Local researchers still run into obstacles when turning scientific ideas into companies, with gaps in funding, engineering support, and entrepreneurial experience 4.
  • Government agencies partnered with specialist venture builder QAI Ventures, backed by Enterprise Singapore, the government agency that supports enterprise development and startups, to add a private-sector route for narrowing the “lab-to-market” gap 6.
  • Other countries can borrow the approach, using targeted public support to attract specialist, international venture capital firms that can turn state-funded research into globally competitive companies.
