SoftBank, Grab explore AI infrastructure in Sarawak
SoftBank Group, Grab, and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS), Sarawak’s state-owned integrated energy company based in Kuching, signed a framework agreement to explore an AI (AI) and digital infrastructure platform in Sarawak, Malaysia, and draw up a phased development plan.
The partners said they would study opportunities across the AI value chain, including AI computing, related services, advanced technologies, robotics, and local workforce and community development.
The agreement does not require the companies to sign final deals or proceed with the project.
SoftBank and Grab also have investment ties. Grab secured US$1.46 billion from SoftBank’s Vision Fund in 2019.
The companies tied the proposal to Sarawak’s goal of reaching high-income status under its Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030.
Separately, the Sarawak government has a Digital Economy Blueprint 2030.
Malaysia has attracted more data center investment, while an analysis raised questions about power availability and clean energy supply.
