SoftBank founder plans $1t AI hub in US with TSMC, Samsung

Masayoshi Son, founder of SoftBank Group, is proposing a US$1 trillion industrial complex in Arizona focused on AI and robotics.

Named “Project Crystal Land,” the initiative aims to create a high-tech manufacturing hub similar to China’s Shenzhen.

SoftBank has approached Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Samsung Electronics to participate.

TSMC, however, said the proposal will not impact its current US$165 billion investment plans in Phoenix.

The project’s feasibility depends on support from the US government and private companies.

SoftBank is in talks with federal and state officials to secure tax incentives and is also exploring financing options similar to large-scale infrastructure projects.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Arizona’s emerging semiconductor cluster represents a strategic U.S. counterbalance to Asia

Son’s trillion-dollar vision builds upon Arizona’s rapidly developing semiconductor ecosystem that already includes significant commitments from major players.

TSMC has already pledged $165 billion to Arizona, planning multiple fabrication plants and an R&D center to support growing AI chip demand 1.

This investment is projected to create over 6,000 high-tech jobs in the state, while Intel’s separate $20 billion expansion will add another 9,000 positions 2.

Phoenix has already broken into North America’s top 20 tech markets with a 17% increase in its technology workforce, creating momentum that Son’s project could accelerate 1.

The project aligns with broader U.S. efforts to reduce dependency on Asian semiconductor manufacturing amid growing recognition of chips as critical infrastructure.

2️⃣ Son’s trillion-dollar vision comes amid unprecedented AI-driven semiconductor growth

The semiconductor industry is already on a strong growth trajectory, with revenues projected to reach $697 billion in 2025 specifically driven by generative AI and data center demands 3.
