SoftBank draws over $17b demand for dollar, euro bonds

SoftBank Corp has received more than US$17.3 billion in investor bids for its dollar and euro bond offerings.

The company revised pricing for US$4.00 and three euro (US$3.54) tranches by at least 25 basis points.

This fundraising move supports SoftBank’s growing investments in AI, including its US$30 billion plan to buy a stake in OpenAI and Masayoshi Son’s US$500 billion “Stargate” project.

Regulatory scrutiny has followed SoftBank’s global expansion, with the US FTC investigating its US$6.5 billion acquisition of semiconductor designer Ampere Computing.

SoftBank has also raised over 600 billion yen (US$4.2 billion) bonds this year, aligning with high Asian demand for dollar debt amid favorable conditions.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ SoftBank’s AI ambitions come amid significant investment volatility

SoftBank’s massive bond issuance reflects Masayoshi Son’s pattern of making bold, large-scale bets that often yield mixed results.

While SoftBank has historically shown strong investment performance with ROIs of 36.6% over the 2012-2024 period, recent quarters have been challenging with the company facing a reported net loss of approximately 269 billion yen ($1.84 billion) for Q4, primarily attributed to underperforming AI investments 1.

This financial pressure is further compounded by a freeze in the IPO market affecting SoftBank’s portfolio companies, with key investments like Swiggy and Ola Electric seeing stock price declines of about 40% 1.

The company’s stock has experienced substantial volatility, losing approximately 45.38% over a four-week period according to market data, highlighting the significant risks accompanying Son’s aggressive investment approach 2.

These fluctuations demonstrate the high-stakes nature of SoftBank’s AI investment strategy, where the company must balance ambitious technological vision with market realities and investor expectations.

2️⃣ The $500 billion “Stargate” investment aligns with broader AI market expansion

SoftBank’s massive AI investments are part of a calculated move to position the company at the forefront of what’s projected to be a transformative economic shift.

The company’s $100 billion commitment to AI infrastructure in the U.S. (part of the broader $500 billion initiative mentioned in the news) is strategically aligned with industry projections that AI will contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030 3.
