🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

SoftBank paid less despite Ampere’s wider customer list

  • SoftBank bought Ampere for $6.5 billion 1. That price sat below the roughly $8 billion valuation when it weighed a minority stake in 2021 1. Customers include Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure 1. HPE and server maker Supermicro join Alibaba and Tencent as customers 1.
  • Pricing likely reflects pressure from hyperscalers (very large cloud providers) building in-house Arm CPUs 23. Microsoft’s Azure Cobalt offers 8.8% lower cost than Ampere-based Azure instances 2. AWS Graviton spurred rivals to design custom silicon 3.
  • Ampere’s share of Arm-based cloud instances fell from over 20% to 18.2% by December 2024 after Azure Cobalt and Google Axion launched 2.

Enterprise software makers should port to Arm on Oracle Cloud A4

  • Oracle’s A4 instances were expected to launch in November 2025 4. Regions include Ashburn and Phoenix 4. Frankfurt and London are also planned 4. They bring up to 45% higher per-core performance than A2 and about 30% better price-performance than AMD EPYC-based Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) E6 shapes (instance types) 5. That gives more than 1,000 A1/A2 customers a reason to move in over 65 regions 4.
  • Independent software vendors selling into Oracle’s customer base should tune for A4’s 12-channel Double Data Rate (DDR) 5 memory and 3.6 GHz cores 4. Oracle is expanding internal use of Ampere processors for Fusion Applications (Oracle’s enterprise app suite) and Block Storage (its cloud storage service) 4.
  • Teams can use Oracle’s developer images (preconfigured virtual machine images) for Java, Python, and Node.js 6 plus Ampere’s AI Playground (a developer resource with pre-built demos) 4 to speed Arm-native builds.
