SoftBank said to borrow $16b for AI investment

SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son is reportedly planning to borrow US$16 billion to invest in AI.

The Information cites sources familiar with the situation, noting that an additional US$8 billion may be borrowed by early 2026.

The Japanese conglomerate is increasing its involvement in AI ventures.

In January 2025, SoftBank was in talks to invest up to US$25 billion in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

This follows a previous US$15 billion commitment to Stargate, a joint venture involving SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI.
