Social networking service Nextdoor relaunches with news, alerts
Nextdoor Holdings has launched a major redesign of its neighborhood-based social platform to boost engagement and deliver timely information.
The redesign includes an alert system for critical events, such as severe weather and power outages.
Additionally, local news will be featured prominently through partnerships with 3,500 publications across the US, UK, and Canada.
This news will be displayed in a carousel at the top of users’ feeds.
In select US cities, Nextdoor is rolling out an AI chatbot called the Faves hub to recommend local businesses and activities based on years of user data.
The move comes amid slowing growth and a nearly 90% stock decline since its 2021 IPO, prompting co-founder Nirav Tolia to return as CEO in 2024.
Nextdoor says it won’t license user-generated content for external AI training, emphasizing the importance of trustworthy information for its 46 million weekly users.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Nextdoor’s redesign reflects broader industry struggles with monetization
Nextdoor’s extensive redesign comes amid significant financial challenges, with the company reporting a negative profit margin of -36.95% and net losses of $91.75 million according to recent financial data 1.
This financial pressure mirrors the broader challenges facing social networks that aren’t among the dominant players, with Nextdoor’s stock having plummeted nearly 90% since its post-IPO peak in 2021.
The company’s strategic pivot toward becoming a “utility” that users visit daily addresses a fundamental challenge for neighborhood-focused platforms: creating consistent engagement when local news and emergencies are inherently sporadic.
Tolia’s emphasis on maintaining $400 million in cash reserves highlights the extended runway Nextdoor has secured while pursuing profitability—a crucial buffer as it attempts this strategic repositioning.
The return of founder Nirav Tolia as CEO after a six-year absence also reflects a broader trend of founders returning to leadership roles during pivotal moments, as seen with Jack Dorsey at Twitter/X.
2️⃣ AI-driven engagement represents proven value for social platforms
