Mastodon announced on Monday its plans to establish a new non-profit organization in Europe.

This move aims to transfer ownership of key components of its ecosystem and distribute control of the platform away from centralized decision-making.

Under this new structure, Mastodon’s creator and CEO Eugen Rochko will hand over management responsibilities to the incoming entity.

Currently, Mastodon serves 835,000 monthly active users across various servers.

The platform will maintain its mastodon.social and mastodon.online servers, which allow users to access the ActivityPub-based network.
