Snap to spin off AI video team into Dotmo

Snap will spin off its internal generative AI video team into Dotmo, a separate company focused on AI models for interactive gaming.

Snap will license technology to Dotmo for gaming and interactive entertainment, and take a large equity stake.

Snap said CTO Bobby Murphy will personally lead the new company’s funding while remaining Snap’s full-time CTO.

The Dotmo team builds on Snap research that has generated videos on mobile devices and explored 4D video diffusion.

The company said those models were for research only and were not released commercially.

Snap said the spinout was partly driven by the high cost of doing that work internally.

Separately, Snap has spent about US$100 million a quarter on machine learning and AI.

It is Snap’s second spinoff effort this year after the company created a subsidiary in January for development of its Specs augmented reality glasses.
