X slashes payments to clickbait, rapid news accounts
X is cutting payments to accounts that post large amounts of clickbait and rapid-fire news aggregation after some conservative news accounts posted they’d received emails notifying them they’d been demonetized, X head of product Nikita Bier said.
Bier said all aggregators had payouts reduced to 60% this cycle and would face another 20% cut next cycle, and he said habitual bait posters who use “🚨BREAKING” on every post will also see lower payments.
He said the move targets behaviour that crowds out original content, while emphasising that it is not limiting reach or speech, only compensation.
The shift comes as the platform continues to refine its creator incentives and faces broader questions over the value of traffic it drives to external sites.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
X’s monetization strategy is a battlefield of trial and error
- X is tightening rules on aggregators as it keeps reworking creator payouts after criticism of its content ecosystem 1.
- X recently floated a policy that would weigh engagement from a creator’s home region, with the goal of reducing attempts to “game” payouts by posting about U.S. or Japanese topics 2.
- The proposal aimed to limit tactics such as pro-Trump accounts outside the U.S. posing as American, including accounts traced to countries such as India and Kenya 3.
- Creator pushback led Elon Musk to pause the home-region policy “until further consideration,” adding another example of quick shifts and rollbacks 2.
The new creator calculus means X is a risky bet for stable income
- Sudden rule changes leave creators guessing about how X calculates monetization, which can change without warning.
- One creator worried about being mislabeled an “aggregator” and losing earnings, which signals fuzzy lines in X’s latest definitions 1.
- The churn adds a lesson for the creator economy since a business built on one platform’s ad-revenue program can unravel fast.
- These moves encourage creators to treat X as a traffic source, then earn elsewhere through options like direct subscriptions that creators control.
