SK Telecom, NTT launch $500m Aion AI fund

SK Telecom, NTT, and Chunghwa Telecom said in Tokyo on June 10 that they will create the US$500 million Aion AI Fund.

The fund will invest in next-generation AI technologies.

The fund will target global AI startups working on AI data center infrastructure, AI semiconductors, and optical communications.

The companies said the fund will launch after its first fundraising round closes soon.

NTT said about 20 companies, including Sony and Toshiba, have expressed interest in taking part, while SK hynix is preparing to join.

SK Telecom has worked with NTT Docomo on virtualized radio access network (vRAN) and AI-radio access network (AI-RAN) since 2022.

But the source announcement described the fund as a new joint initiative with NTT and Chunghwa Telecom, rather than an explicit extension of that work.
