SK Telecom launches auto in-flight Wi-Fi on Korean Air

SK Telecom has launched a service that allows subscribers to connect to in-flight Wi-Fi without manual logins or authentication.

The feature, named T In-flight Wi-Fi Automatic Roaming, enables customers to use their existing mobile plans for in-flight internet access.

This service uses Passpoint Wi-Fi technology to automatically authenticate users’ devices with SIM or app-based credentials.

Currently, the service is available on select Korean Air flights using Boeing 777-300ER and A350-900 aircraft.

SK Telecom plans to expand the service to additional aircraft operated by domestic airlines.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ In-flight connectivity evolution moves toward frictionless experiences

SK Telecom’s automatic roaming represents a significant milestone in the decades-long evolution of in-flight connectivity, addressing one of the most persistent pain points for travelers.

The authentication challenge has been a major barrier since commercial in-flight Wi-Fi was introduced, with the first in-flight email sent in 2001 marking the beginning of passenger connectivity 1.

The industry has progressed from rudimentary air-to-ground technology plagued by bandwidth limitations and outages to more reliable satellite-based systems using Ku-band and Ka-band technology capable of delivering up to 70 Mbps 2.

This technological progression has been driven by surging consumer demand, with 77% of travelers now prioritizing Wi-Fi availability when selecting airlines 3.

SK Telecom’s implementation of Passpoint Wi-Fi technology reflects broader industry efforts to remove friction points that have traditionally made in-flight connectivity cumbersome compared to ground-based experiences.

2️⃣ Airlines weaponize connectivity in loyalty program competition

SK Telecom’s automatic roaming service emerges amid an accelerating industry trend of making in-flight connectivity a strategic loyalty asset rather than just a revenue stream.

Major carriers like American Airlines are integrating free Wi-Fi directly into loyalty programs, with American announcing complimentary service for AAdvantage members starting January 2026 across 90% of its fleet 4.
