SK On reportedly in talks with US defense firm over battery supply

South Korean battery manufacturer SK On Co. is in discussions with a US defense firm to supply batteries for unmanned underwater vehicles powered by AI, industry sources said on February 4.

The company has also approached a European defense firm about supplying batteries for electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles.

SK On is currently supplying battery cells for an unmanned vehicle project led by Hyundai Rotem, a Hyundai Motor Group subsidiary.

Industry analysts expect SK On to focus on developing high-density ternary nickel-cobalt-manganese batteries in the short term, with potential exploration of all-solid-state batteries for defense use over the longer term.
