SK hynix weighs US NAND chip plant through Solidigm

SK hynix is considering building a NAND flash memory chip plant in the US through its subsidiary Solidigm, a California-based storage company it acquired from Intel, with upstate New York emerging as a leading candidate, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The proposed project is separate from SK hynix’s talks with Intel about making memory chips at Intel’s Ohio facility.

No agreement has been reached on the Solidigm investment, and details are still under discussion, the people said.

A US plant could reduce Solidigm’s reliance on its sole NAND production facility in Dalian, China. It could also help protect the business from potential US tariffs and tighter export curbs on chipmaking equipment bound for China.

SK hynix said Solidigm is reviewing options to strengthen competitiveness but has not confirmed any specific plan.

The company is also weighing higher US manufacturing costs and pressure from Washington as the US and South Korea discuss trade and investment issues.
